SIBO Breath Test (Lactulose)

£210.00

The SIBO breath test is an at-home test from a UK clinic for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. After a lactulose drink you breathe into eight tubes over three hours, and the lab measures the hydrogen and methane that bacteria in the small intestine produce. For bloating within an hour of eating, constant gas, IBS that treatments have not shifted, or constipation and diarrhoea that take turns.

What you receive

Your at-home breath test kit with eight collection tubes, the lactulose solution and the prep-diet sheet, laboratory analysis of hydrogen and methane in each sample, plus a lab report that charts both gases over the three hours against the reference thresholds, so you can see whether there is an overgrowth and whether it is hydrogen or methane dominant. View a sample lab report.

Delivery and turnaround

Free UK delivery and prepaid return, both by DHL courier. Kits are dispatched within 1 to 2 working days and delivered the next working day. Results ready approximately 7 to 10 working days from when the lab receives your sample. International delivery is available, with costs calculated at checkout.

What this test measures

What does the SIBO breath test test for?

It measures the hydrogen and methane in your breath at eight points over three hours after a lactulose drink; a rise in either gas earlier than it should appear means bacteria are fermenting in the small intestine, where they do not belong, and the pattern tells your practitioner which type of overgrowth it is.

Baseline & peak

Your fasting baseline and the height of each peak show how much overgrowth there is, not only whether there is any.

Hydrogen

The gas most gut bacteria produce when they ferment sugar. An early rise points to hydrogen-dominant overgrowth, the type most often behind bloating and loose stools.

Methane

Produced by archaea rather than bacteria, and linked to constipation. The test reports it separately, because the two types are treated differently.

Timing of the rise

Ten samples over three hours show when each gas rises, which separates small-intestine fermentation from the normal rise in the large intestine.

Is this test right for me?

Who is the SIBO breath test for?

For bloating that arrives within an hour of eating, gas that never settles, and IBS, constipation or diarrhoea that diet changes and treatments have not fixed.

Bloating after a stomach bug

Often linked to: overgrowth following a gut infection or food poisoning.

This test measures: whether fermentation is happening in the small intestine.

Bloating within an hour of eating

Often linked to: bacteria fermenting food in the small intestine, before it reaches the colon.

This test measures: hydrogen and methane at eight points over three hours.

Constant gas

Often linked to: bacterial fermentation higher up the gut than it should be.

This test measures: the timing and height of the hydrogen and methane rise.

Constipation

Often linked to: methane-producing organisms, which slow the gut.

This test measures: methane at every sample point, reported separately from hydrogen.

Constipation and diarrhoea that alternate

Often linked to: a mix of hydrogen and methane producers.

This test measures: the balance between the two gases across the test.

Diarrhoea or loose stools

Often linked to: hydrogen-dominant overgrowth.

This test measures: hydrogen at every sample point.

Food intolerances that keep growing

Often linked to: bacteria fermenting carbohydrates before you can absorb them.

This test measures: the fermentation response to the lactulose drink.

IBS that nothing has shifted

Often linked to: small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, one of the causes often found behind an IBS diagnosis.

This test measures: both gases, so hydrogen and methane overgrowth are each ruled in or out.

Low iron or B12 with gut symptoms

Often linked to: overgrowth interfering with absorption in the small intestine.

This test measures: whether there is fermentation in the small intestine.

Reflux & belching

Often linked to: gas produced high in the gut by overgrowth.

This test measures: the early-rise pattern of hydrogen and methane.

Symptoms worse on a high-fibre diet

Often linked to: fermentation of fibre and prebiotics by overgrown bacteria.

This test measures: how strongly your gut ferments a sugar it cannot absorb.

Tiredness & brain fog with gut symptoms

Often linked to: malabsorption and bacterial by-products from overgrowth.

This test measures: the amount of overgrowth, from the height of the peaks.

How do I interpret my results?

Making sense of a lab report is the most important part of testing. Once your results are ready, your lab report is uploaded to your secure Client Folder. From there, you choose your level of support from our UK-registered nutritional therapist (optional, priced separately): a Lab Findings Review or a Comprehensive Consultation.

What do our customers say?

5.0from 18 verified clinic reviews

“I was unable to digest anything when I first met Carmen but using this GI MAP test she identified what was wrong (her findings were confirmed later by intensive testing by a gastroenterologist). I can't recommend working with her more.”

AishaVerified customerReview of the Comprehensive Stool Test (GI MAP) Plus Zonulin

An easy first step that showed where to start

This test was the first port of call for me working with Carmen. Most things start with the gut so this seemed like a good place to start. The test is very easy and straightforward and results are sent out in a matter of weeks.

AdamVerified customerReview of the Comprehensive Stool Test (GI MAP) Plus Zonulin

This is a fantastic GI MAP stool test. … I love that it included H.pylori, which the previous test didn't test for. Also tells you how your keystone species are looking, if you have enough digestive enzymes and which key infections you have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do the SIBO breath test at home in the UK?

Yes. It is an at-home test: you order online, the kit comes to your door by DHL, you collect at home and the prepaid DHL return takes it to the lab. No GP referral or clinic visit is needed. We send kits to any UK address, and international delivery is priced at checkout.

What is the difference between the SIBO breath test and the GI-MAP?

They look at different parts of the gut. The GI-MAP is a stool test that maps the bacteria, parasites and pathogens of the large intestine and checks digestion and inflammation. The SIBO breath test looks for bacteria in the small intestine, which a stool sample cannot see. If your main symptom is bloating soon after eating, start here; if it is a mix of gut symptoms, or symptoms beyond the gut, the GI-MAP is the broader first test, and the two are often used together.

Is the SIBO breath test worth it if I already have an IBS diagnosis?

Yes, and that is often when it is most useful. IBS is a description of symptoms, not a cause, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is one of the causes most often found behind it. The breath test either finds an overgrowth, which can then be addressed specifically, or rules it out so you and your practitioner can look elsewhere.

How accurate is the SIBO breath test?

The laboratory measures hydrogen and methane in each of the eight breath samples and reports both against reference thresholds, so the result is a curve over three hours rather than a single reading. Lactulose is used because it is not absorbed, so it reaches the whole small intestine. Breath testing is the usual non-invasive test for SIBO, and like any lab test it is a snapshot: preparation matters, which is why the kit comes with a prep diet, and a practitioner reads the curve against your symptoms.

Can I get the SIBO breath test on the NHS?

Sometimes, for a specific question and usually after a gastroenterology referral; waits can be long and not every area offers it. This test is the same type of hydrogen and methane breath test, done at home and ordered privately through a clinic. The price covers the kit, the lab analysis and your lab report; having the report interpreted is a separate, optional consultation.

How do I prepare for the SIBO breath test?

Pick a morning when you can stay at home for about three hours without eating, exercising, sleeping or smoking. The day before, eat only from the prep-diet sheet in the kit (plain protein, white rice or bread, eggs, clear broth, water, black tea or coffee), then fast for 12 hours overnight with water only. Stop probiotics 24 hours before; wait at least four weeks after antibiotics and seven days after laxatives or antacids, and ask your practitioner about anything else you take. On the morning: baseline sample, the lactulose drink, then a sample every 20 minutes until the tenth. Post the kit back within two days.

Can someone help me interpret my results, even if I tested elsewhere?

Yes. Book a Lab Findings Review with us and a registered nutritional therapist will take you through every marker against your symptoms and history, whether you tested with us or elsewhere; bring your report to the session. If you then want a personalised plan, that is the Comprehensive Consultation.
