Gut Health

About

The gut (also known as the digestive system or gastrointestinal tract) is made up of a group of organs: the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas and gallbladder, and is home to your unique gut microbiome; a complex ecosystem of microorganisms that live symbiotically with you. It plays an essential role in your digestive function and overall health, absorbing nutrients from the food you eat and excreting waste.

Symptoms

When the gut is healthy, we don’t notice that it is working harmoniously, but when it has a bacterial imbalance – also known as gut dysbiosis – it can lead to unpleasant physical symptoms such as:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Acid reflux
  • Stomach pain
  • Indigestion
  • Flatulence/bloated
  • Change in stools
  • Skin rashes
  • Depression and/or mood swings
  • Brain fog

Causes

Digestive issues are very common, negatively impacting a person’s quality of life. Gut health is affected by poor nutrition, food allergies, excess medication/antibiotics, stress, autoimmune disorders and can cause chronic conditions such as:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
  • Intestinal permeability (leaky gut)
  • Parasites
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Colon cancer
  • Stomach cancer

43% of the population of the UK have experienced digestive problems in their lifetimes, but only 59% of them have ever visited a physician to discuss them.

Treatments

Understanding which foods agree with your gut and which ones don’t is essential to your digestive health, as well as knowing what other factors in your life are impacting it.

Using a Functional medicine approach, we identify and improve areas of your nutrition and lifestyle to support your digestive health.

Nutritional Therapy

Food is your friend.

The food you eat can either be the safest, most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison. We assess the origins of your symptoms by analysing your food diary to see what nutrients are lacking in your diet, as well as what foods may be contributing to your gut issues.

We then design a specific nutrition plan to restore optimal gut health and digestive function. This may include a supplement plan to replenish missing essential nutrients.

Functional Testing

Harnessing the power of science.

The most effective way of evaluating your gut health is through a microbiome stool test. This comprehensive analysis of your gastrointestinal (GI) ecosystem and chronic disease-related microbial markers (bacteria, yeast, parasites) provides us with accurate and scientific data.

We first interpret the lab’s results, then confidently design the right plan to restore beneficial bacteria, or alternatively, remove or replace unwanted pathogens. This is a simple and easy home test. Checking the state of your gut health has never been easier.

Lifestyle Coaching

Your health. Your choice.

It is possible your lifestyle is affecting your gut, after all, 70% of your immune system resides in it. The gut-brain axis is a communication system linking your gut and brain, that influences intestinal activities such as immune function, and cognitive activities such as your mood and mental health. Anxiety, depression, stress, sleep problems and autism all have well-established links to disruptions of the gut microbiome.

Within your nutritional consultation, we investigate those aspects of your lifestyle that may be contributing to your mental and gut health.

Digestion, Food Allergy, Skin Condition

I highly recommend Carmen at Nutrition Diets. As a Coeliac I've always had a very sensitive stomach and have battled with gut problems for the majority of my life. Recently I've been having problems with my skin where I've been getting acne like symptoms. I got in touch with Carmen and explained what was happening to me, she was very clear in coming up with a plan and organised some tests for me. Once the results came back for those tests, we had a consultation where she explained what was happening to me and why, it all made sense when she expressed that certain foods were more problematic than others (Fermented foods made my skin worse etc.), she knew exactly what was wrong with me (gut permeability and liver toxicity) and I was put on a protocol to help heal my gut and liver. 3 months later my skin has totally cleared up and I can feel a noticeable change. Carmen is very knowledgeable, she clearly knows what she is talking about and on top of that is passionate about what she does. I would highly recommend getting in touch with her even just for an assessment. I have already recommended her to friends and family who have gut problems.

Candida, Weight Loss

I have seen Carmen on several occasions over the past 3 years, she has helped me get candida and acidity under control with diet and supplements. I not only feel better but also lost the weight that I struggled for years to lose. I have always been extremely happy with Carmen’s wealth of knowledge, caring attitude and continued after care. I will always come back to Carmen when I need help in the future.
