Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Stool Test
The H. pylori stool test is an at-home test from a UK clinic for the stomach bacterium behind most gastritis, many ulcers and a good deal of reflux and indigestion. One stool sample tells you whether H. pylori is present, how much there is and whether it carries the virulence markers that make a strain more likely to cause damage. For heartburn, upper stomach pain or indigestion that keeps coming back, and for checking that a treatment has cleared it.

What does the H. pylori stool test measure?
It tests one stool sample for Helicobacter pylori, reports how much is present, and screens the virulence markers that show how aggressive the strain is, which is what separates a harmless carrier from an infection that needs dealing with.
Before and after treatment
The same test repeated after a course of treatment confirms whether the bacterium has gone.
How much is there
The bacterial load, which helps tell a low-level presence from an infection that is driving symptoms.
Is H. pylori present?
A clear positive or negative for active infection, from a stool sample rather than a breath test or an endoscopy.
Virulence markers
The strain markers linked to gastritis, ulcers and a higher risk of damage, so treatment can be matched to the risk.
Who is the H. pylori stool test for?
For heartburn, indigestion or upper stomach pain that keeps coming back, for anyone who has been told they have gastritis or an ulcer, and for checking that a treatment has worked.
A family history of ulcers or stomach cancer
Often linked to: H. pylori strains carrying the higher-risk virulence markers.
This test measures: the virulence markers of the strain.
After antibiotics for H. pylori
Often linked to: treatment that did not fully clear the infection.
This test measures: whether any H. pylori remains, for a clean before-and-after comparison.
Bad breath that will not clear
Often linked to: H. pylori in the stomach, which can produce the gases behind it.
This test measures: H. pylori presence.
Burping & feeling full quickly
Often linked to: low stomach acid from an H. pylori infection.
This test measures: presence and load of H. pylori.
Gut symptoms after a GI-MAP found H. pylori
Often linked to: a follow-up check after a protocol.
This test measures: H. pylori and its load on its own, at a lower cost than repeating the whole GI-MAP.
Heartburn & reflux
Often linked to: H. pylori, which disturbs stomach acid and the stomach lining.
This test measures: whether H. pylori is present and how much.
Indigestion & bloating after meals
Often linked to: H. pylori lowering stomach acid so food is not broken down properly.
This test measures: H. pylori load.
Low iron or B12
Often linked to: H. pylori reducing the acid needed to absorb them.
This test measures: H. pylori, so a cause of poor absorption can be ruled in or out.
Nausea or loss of appetite
Often linked to: inflammation of the stomach lining.
This test measures: H. pylori, which is behind most chronic gastritis.
Reflux medication for years
Often linked to: an untreated H. pylori infection underneath the symptoms.
This test measures: whether the bacterium is present and how aggressive the strain is.
Stomach symptoms since travelling
Often linked to: picking up H. pylori, which is common worldwide.
This test measures: H. pylori presence and virulence.
Upper stomach pain
Often linked to: gastritis or an ulcer, in both of which H. pylori is the usual finding.
This test measures: H. pylori and its virulence markers.

What do our customers say?
“I love that it included H.pylori, which the previous test didn't test for. Also tells you how your keystone species are looking, if you have enough digestive enzymes and which key infections you have.”
PennyVerified customerReview of the Comprehensive Stool Test (GI MAP)Findings later confirmed by a gastroenterologist
I was unable to digest anything when I first met Carmen but using this GI MAP test she identified what was wrong (her findings were confirmed later by intensive testing by a gastroenterologist). I can't recommend working with her more.
AishaVerified customerReview of the Comprehensive Stool Test (GI MAP) Plus ZonulinAn easy first step that showed where to start
This test was the first port of call for me working with Carmen. Most things start with the gut so this seemed like a good place to start. The test is very easy and straightforward and results are sent out in a matter of weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do the H. pylori stool test at home in the UK?
Yes. It is an at-home test: you order online, the kit comes to your door by DHL, you collect at home and the prepaid DHL return takes it to the lab. No GP referral or clinic visit is needed. We send kits to any UK address, and international delivery is priced at checkout.
What is the difference between the H. pylori stool test and the GI-MAP?
The GI-MAP includes H. pylori with its virulence factors as one of 87 markers, alongside the rest of your gut: pathogens, parasites, your microbiome, digestion and inflammation. This test looks at H. pylori alone, at a lower price. Choose this one when the question is specifically H. pylori, such as reflux and upper stomach pain, a known gastritis or ulcer, or a check after treatment; choose the GI-MAP when the symptoms are broader or you want the whole picture.
Is the H. pylori stool test worth it if I have been on reflux medication for years?
Yes. Acid-suppressing medication eases the symptoms but does not treat an H. pylori infection underneath them, and the infection is one of the commonest reasons reflux and indigestion keep returning. A stool test answers the question without an endoscopy. If it is positive, treatment can be targeted; if it is negative, you and your practitioner can look at the other causes.
How accurate is the H. pylori stool test?
The test looks for H. pylori directly in a stool sample and reports its presence, its load and its virulence markers, rather than relying on antibodies in blood, which can stay positive for years after an infection has gone. Stool testing is one of the accepted non-invasive methods for H. pylori, including for checking that treatment has worked. Like any lab test, the report is a snapshot, which is why a practitioner reads it against your symptoms and history.
Can I get the H. pylori stool test on the NHS?
Sometimes. A GP can arrange an H. pylori stool antigen or breath test when there is a clear clinical reason. This is a private version ordered through a clinic, with the strain’s virulence markers and bacterial load reported as well as a positive or negative. The price covers the kit, the lab analysis and your lab report; having the report interpreted is a separate, optional consultation.
When should I collect my sample?
On a Sunday or Monday. The sample must be shipped within 24 hours of collection and DHL does not collect at weekends, so collect on Sunday or Monday and book your free DHL collection for the next day. If you take acid-suppressing medication, antibiotics or bismuth, ask your practitioner how long to pause them before the test, because they can hide the bacterium. Keep the packed envelope in the fridge until the driver arrives. Full instructions are in the kit.
Can someone help me interpret my results, even if I tested elsewhere?
Yes. Book a Lab Findings Review with us and a registered nutritional therapist will take you through every marker against your symptoms and history, whether you tested with us or elsewhere; bring your report to the session. If you then want a personalised plan, that is the Comprehensive Consultation.
