Weight Management
About
Whether you are looking to lose or gain weight, long-term health and sustainable weight management is an ongoing process.
We don’t believe in shortcuts. Instead, we support you on your journey, starting with small achievable steps that build long-lasting habits, for long-lasting results.
Causes of weight gain
Beyond the obvious factors of nutrition, lifestyle, and exercise, weight gain is influenced by other areas of your health and could be due to a more serious underlying health condition:
- Cushing’s disease
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Hypothyroidism
- Medication — steroids, antidepressants, birth control
- Menopause
- Metabolic Syndrome
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
- Sleep apnea, insomnia
- Stress
Causes of weight loss
When speaking about weight, the focus tends to be on losing weight. However, being underweight can compromise your health and may be associated with underlying chronic conditions and illness such as:
- Addison’s disease
- Anorexia
- Cancer
- Coeliac disease
- Depression or anxiety
- Digestive issues — IBS, parasites, ulcerative colitis
- Infertility
- Hyperthyroidism
- Stress
On average, weight loss attempts last four weeks for women, and six weeks for men. Roughly 80% of people who diet and lose weight do not maintain weight loss after 1 year.
1.9 billion
adults globally are overweight
At least 1.25 million
people in the UK are affected by an eating disorder
48%
of people in the UK have tried to lose weight in the last year
Treatments
Combining the Functional Medicine approach with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) as part of your Nutrition & Lifestyle therapy, we look at you as a whole and consider your genetics, biochemistry, and nutrition & lifestyle habits to guide your weight management.
Nutritional Therapy
Food is your friend.
Crash-diets and quick fixes are temporary, and the process can be unpleasant and frustrating. One of the most important things to recognise is that short-term measures lead to short-term results. Your excess weight did not appear overnight, and it will not disappear overnight either.
Likewise, if you are trying to gain weight, it is important for your calorie intake to be done in a healthy and supervised way, and not overcompensating with excessive processed, sugary or fatty foods that can further impact your physical and mental health.
Many people struggle after a few weeks of dieting, as their initial enthusiasm declines and old habits kick in. Nutritional therapy and lifestyle coaching provides you with the knowledge, motivation and accountability supporting you to maintain consistency and discipline.
During your consultation, we discuss your health history, weight goals and the reasons behind them. We assess your dietary choices and habits, and how these relate to your lifestyle, then design a Nutrition & Lifestyle Action Plan personalised to your needs.
Lifestyle Coaching
Empowers you to be at your best.
To sustainably manage your weight it is essential to understand how your psychology impacts your behaviour, emotions and relationship with foods. Having the right mind set is fundamental for long-term change.
Most people know the basic principle that ‘less food, more exercise’ helps lose weight. But putting this theory into practice is easier said than done, and there are many psychological and lifestyle factors that act as a barrier.
Using NLP techniques, we help you recognise how your unconscious habits and food choices have impacted you throughout your life. We give you the tools to achieve and maintain your weight goals by reframing your relationship with food, modifying your habits and replacing unhealthy food choices with nutritious ones.
We also assess areas of your life that influence your physical and mental wellbeing such as sleep, stress, physical activity/exercise and mindfulness and relaxation practices, and look to build these into your Nutrition & Lifestyle Action Plan.
Functional Testing
Harness the power of science.
Whilst food and physical activity play an important role in your weight, the influence of physiological and genetic factors is often overlooked when it comes to approaching weight management.
Stress, immunity, hormone imbalance, thyroid, gut function, illness and use of medications can all impact your weight too.
In cases where weight gain or loss is not solely related to food intake, Functional testing can be beneficial to identify or rule out suspected underlying health conditions that may be influencing your weight:
- DUTCH Plus CAR Test – extensive profile of sex and adrenal hormones plus melatonin and organic acids
- Nutritional Evaluation Test – comprehensive functional and nutritional assessment
- Stool Test – comprehensive analysis of the GI ecosystem and chronic disease-related microbial markers
- Thyroid Assessment – analyses TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, anti-TG antibodies, and anti-TPO antibodies to assess thyroid function, as well as thyroid auto-immunity

Stress, Weight ManagementI had no idea how much my diet and lifestyle was affecting me until I started seeing Carmen. I work in TV and my routine changes all the time. It's usually early starts and late finishes so the lifestyle can be intense. During COVID I was out of work and lost a lot of weight. When the work picked up again my energy levels, mood and weight did not... Carmen opened my eyes to my food and lifestyle choices. I was drinking way too much coffee, snacking at random times of day instead of eating proper meals or even skipping meals completely, and my sleep was no good. Carmen's knowledge, coaching and positive personality have helped me change my old habits and I'm now a lot more conscious and disciplined about my food choices. My energy levels and sleep have improved massively, my weight is increasing and my stress is now under control. Muchas gracias Carmen!
